Poetic Devices and the Beatles

As you may or may not know, I am a huge Beatles fan.  When I was in high school they created a documentary called the "Beatles Anthology" and I was hooked.  The sixteen year old Mrs. Engman experienced "Beatlemania" all over again, even though they weren't very popular with the kids in my grade.  Beatles songs are still popular today, and I bet if I played some songs you would know them--even though they are from a LONG time ago!

Beatles song lyrics are sometimes very cryptic.  A song that states "I am the eggman, I am the walrus!" makes one wonder....what are they talking about!!  Those metaphors sure allow a listener to use their imagination.

In today's blogging session, please read the following Beatles lyrics.  They are from a variety of songs, and when we are finished with this I will play some of my favorites for you in class.  Maybe you will learn to love the Beatles as much as I do...or just appreciate the interesting writing.  Look at the lines, determine the figurative language used, and maybe interpret what message the Beatles were trying to convey to listeners.  Choose three to analyze and comment on other students' work.  Remember to be respectful and positive because no answer is right or wrong. It's just your interpretation.

Beatles Lyrics

We take a walk, the sun is shining down, / Burns my feet as they touch the ground

It's been a hard day's night, and I been working like a dog

I ain't got nothing but love, babe / Eight days a week

Friday night arrives without a suitcase

Thoughts meander like a restless wind / Inside a letter box

I look at the floor and I see it needs sweeping / Still my guitar gently weeps

The long and winding road / That leads to your door / Will never disappear
The clouds will be a daisy chain

Tomorrow never knows.

All you need is love.

Limitless undying love which shines around me like a million suns

Julia / Her hair of floating sky is shimmering

Enjoy the conversation!

  2. the three quotes I picked were, It's been a hard day's work, and I've been working like a dog. that is a simile and I picture this guy at the offic in his cubical at night and the offic is abandoned because everyone went home but he still had work to do. His shirt is wrinkled, his tie is undone, there is papers all over the floor and his breif case is open on his desk, as he is packing his papers for home. He had bags under his eyes and he refers to dogs because they run around all day and all night and they sit at there house when they are tired and I picture a hound all droopy eyed and barily lifting his head as he stairs into your soul.
the second quote I picked is I ain't got nothing but love babe, eight days a week.
I think it is a idiom and means that he has so much love for her that it could strech over 8 days not just seven and that he would be there every day and more.
the third and final quote I picked was
    Tomorrow never knows.
    that would be a personifacation.
I think it means that know matter how much planning you do, or how much info you know about tomorrow, There is always somthing that could happen and you never know what will happen so tomorrow never knows because anything could happen.

  5. I like all of them but my top 3 are
    1.Tomorrow never knows,
I think what they mean by that is and I quote "Tomorrow will bring something new"
    2. All you need is love,
I think what they mean by that is that love is better than anything in the world! ( And for those of you that like moola (Money) they mean that to)
    3. Julia/Her hair of floating sky is shimmering,
I think what they are talking about this girl named Julia,Abvously , They must of fallen in love with her. She must have been very luck about that.

  6. For the first one I thought of a man walking down the side of a lake as the sun shining down on him with his feet burning each step. I also like the one that says aint got nothing to love eight days a week. I think of a big love sign. The last one I liked was the one that said working like a dog. I thought of a man working at a farm with the sun shining bright as he is hauling wood and feeding the animals as he is sweating a glass of water.

  7. Here is the 3 quotes I chose-
1.Thoughts meander *like* a restless wind / Inside a letter box.
2.Limitless undying love which shines around me *like* a million suns.
3.It's been a hard day's night, and I been working *like* a dog.

Here is what kind of writing is-
1st. Simile, because the used the word *like*.
2nd. Simile, because the used the word *like*.
3rd. Simile, because the used the word *like*.

I like this song because it has alot of similes in it. I love smilies, because they are very easy to rember. I even made up a song-
A simile is the word like or as. The test is like a piece of cake and as yellow as a lemon.

5.The clouds will be a daisy chain
6.We take a walk, the sun is shining down, / Burns my feet as they touch the ground

Here is the kind of writing-
4.Metaphor-cuse there is not 8 days in a week there is only 7 days in a week.
5.Metaphor-cause clouds can not be a cain of daisies.
6.Metaphor-cause the ground can be hot,but if he wore shoes his feet could not have been burned.

  9. The three lyrics i picked were Friday night arrives without a suitcase and that is personification because friday night can't actually walk in without a suitcase. The next one I picked was thought meander like a restless wind inside a letter box and this is personification and a silile because thoughts can't actually meander around and it is a simile because it is comparing two things using like. the last one I picked was All you need is love. This would be a hyperbole because it is a big exageration because you can't actually live with nothing else but someone loving you!

  10. The three quotes I chose are
    - It's been a hard day's night and I've been working like a dog (this is a simile because of the word like)
    - Tommorrow never knows (Personification because tommorrow can't know anything anyway)
    Last but not least
    - Friday night arrives without a suitcase ( This is personification because friday night can't have a suitcase.

  11. [It's been a hard day's night, and I been working like a dog (SIMILE) it has the word like in it and a simile is comparing two or more things with the words like or as in it.
-Friday night arrives without a suitcase (personification)because a day can't hold a suitcase let alone walk! and a Personification gives human qualities to somthing that isn't human
-All you need is love (hyperbole)because you need a lot more than love to survive for instaints you need at least water and food! Aha
