Woodsong

Gary Paulsen is a very famous author.  He writes a lot of realistic fiction about survival in the outdoors.  In the next selection that we are going to study in class, we will look at a memoir that he has written about an experience with an animal.

To get us thinking about our own experiences in order to make connections with this text, could  you share an experience that you have had outdoors with an animal?  Feel free to comment on your classmate's stories as well.  I will start the conversation with a story from this weekend about my brother, Paul.

  1. My parents live in Zim, which is a rural area that is right on the St. Louis River. In fact, my parents have a trail that goes right to the river in their backyard! As I was growing up we always walked along the trail and went fishing or tubing in the river. Now that I think about it, I was really lucky to have that so close to my house. My brother started bow hunting this year and asked my parents if he could hunt in the back along the trail where there is a wide open area. He was sitting outside in the stand when he saw a HUGE bear come walking out. He started making noises like a dog barking but the bear came closer and closer to him! He started to get really nervous because the bear wasn't scared at all. Finally the bear left, and so did Paul! He didn't hunt back there for the rest of the day. I go running on the roads around my parent's house and I think that I am going to take a break from that for a while. Wow! I don't want to have an experience like that!

I have had an expirience in the wilderness before. Last year my dad shot a deer in our woods and when he gutted the doe I thought I would be sick for a while.

Another time would be when my family and I went down to see our realitives in Lousiana, we went to my aunt Myra's place. She has a swamp/river in their place, it's huge. Well, when we went to see the swamp we saw snakes, frogs, and on our last time my dad and i even saw somthing like an Alligator!
      Well, got to go,ahola

  6. One time I was camping in the boundry waters and we had hotdogs for lunch the next morning a squirrel was drinking the hotdog juice and another was eating bread crumbs. It was sad because squirrels don't usually eat meat but they do scavenge.

  8. Once when me and my mom were on a walk with my small little springer spanel, cookie, our neighbors that have pigs, donkeys, and cows were not home at the time and we were on the walk. Well when we were walking past their yard, there donkeys were lose but they stay in the yard usally, but this time the little one started galloping to me and my mom and it stared to try and pounce on cookie dog. I was teriffied because i was holding the leash and then the mom donkey started coming towards us but she was on a leash with a weight on it but when she was running towards us her weight got stuck on the tractor part i will continue later.

  9. I am surrounded by woods and it is very peacful. I like to run around and play fetch with my dogs Kyrah and BooBoo(a.k.a Otto). One time I was walking in the woods by my house and I heard a chirping noise behind a tree. I went to the tree and i found a little robin on its back. Its wing was wrapped around a vine. I slowly bent down to unwrap it. After a few minutes, the robin flew away. I was so proud of myself!

    1. Hey RJ,
When I was about 5, I had my LUCKY fishing pole. But we lost it. I caught a fish about as long as your arm. I don't know what kind it was. My grandma Kathy had lost alot of her fishing line. A differnt time when I went camping at Dunka River. I went camping off of the bridge there ans I had a zepco rino fishing pole. I lost my bobber, sinkers, some of the line, my hook, & my bait. Me and my step sister Jessica thougt it was a rino fish & my other step sister Cindy did not care. At lest it was not the whole contier og bait.
