The Horse Snake

We have been working so hard on our memiors!  I have been so impressed with the high quality of writing in our class.  Do we have any future authors out there?  I think so!

Reading examples of different genres of literature can help us to become great authors.  We have talked about word choice, descriptions, and sensory language.  Today, we are going to discuss how setting plays a role in a story.

How does setting make a difference in the plot of a story, or in a character's actions?

In today's discussion, give an example of how the setting influences the events or characters in the story the Horse Snake.

Also, in your memior, identify the setting and then ask for some feedback as to how to add more details and descriptions to make a movie in your mind.

  4. I don't like snakes. Why would someone live in the jungle where there are snakes that could kill you?

    1. there are some snakes that have a poison for killing and a poison for healing. Sometimes snakes can be helpful.

    2. sometimes snakes can be used for boots, medicines, and in some cases; weapons.

    3. snakes can be used for many things such as, medicine, boots, or even weapons, like in blow darts. Snakes are also helpful to the enviroment, they eat mice and other rodents. If they're a boa, they might eat things such as, wild dogs, meat eating birds, and even other dangerous snakes!

    5. Goober- some people LOVE snakes so that is why they live there. Also because that is the only place to live.

  5. Setting plays a big part in the story Horse Snake bacause since they are living in Vietnam there are snakes like the horse snake and if it were in a colder area it would be impossible for the snake the survive in the habitat. So the setting influences the characters because they have to be worried about the horse snake while people in other regions have to worry about other things like bears.
The setting in my story, "My First Buck", is a swamp. Any suggestions on how to improve my disrcription of it?

    1. Soph maybe you could say what your stand looked or what other animals you saw out there. What kind of gun do you have? You might want to add some details like that.:)

    2. i agree with ChloCho, you may want to say if you were at state forest or just on your place

    3. I think you could discribe the color and smell of the swamp. I liked the setting that you had, there just might be a little more detail that you could add. Otherwise it is an overall great story!

    4. you may want to also include if you had seen the buck before. Some people can memorize deer's features and reconize them.Another thing you may want to add would be what you heard and if you saw unusual animals like birds with weird sounds.

  6. I agree with Soph, because the setting does play a huge part of the story. If they just said "It has lots of trees" how would you know what it was, what kind of trees are they? You wouldn't know would you? So make sure to put ALLOT OF DETAILS IN YOUR STORY for Authors' Tea!

  7. i think the setting played a big role when the snake was at the water and the author said that the snake looked like a hammock.

in my story " the first time i saw Zoey" the setting was at the hospital and at my house and at my sister's house. What should i do to make it better?

  10. In the Horse Snake, the setting is in the jugle and in the rice fields. The setting of the jungle helps discribe that there are tigers and deadily snakes that they are used to because they come alot. The rice fields make it feel calm and makes the Horse Snake more dedily in such a calm place.

    1. You could discribe what the campsite looks like or how it smells there, you could discreibe what color your sleeping bag looks like, how muck and how hard it rained. But I think this could be a great story after a bit more detail. I dont think I got to here this story I wish that I did get to here it.

  15. Well setting plays a big roll in stories because without setting it would be boring because you would'nt get the same feeling as the person in the story does.
