What is reader response?

Welcome to my reading blog!  This is going to be a tool for helping us to talk about one of my favorite things in the whole world....reading!

As we read in class I will post questions that you will respond to.  We will be able to respond to each other's ideas and build on conversations about literature.  You will have time to blog during class each week.

Our next story is going to be "Lob's Girl."  It is a tragic tale with an unusual ending.  Please write a response to the question below by commenting on this post.  Use your initials so I can see who responds.  Please remember etiquette for writing online and be respectful of your classmate's opinions.

Have you ever read a story and something totally bizarre happened at the end that you didn't expect?  Please explain the story and tell us how you felt at the moment that the surprise occurred.

If you haven't read any stories like this, please describe an idea that you could use for writing a story with a surprise in the climax.  Be creative!

I am anxious to see your responses.  I will start the conversation going by telling you about a story that I read this summer with a surprise ending!

Happy Reading!

Mrs. E.

  1. This summer I read a book about supernatural beings. It was a science fiction book. In the story the girl can read people's minds and it is because she is a fairy. She finds out that she has a special fairy gift that she can use for one wish. She keeps it close by her because she knows if other fairys know she has it they will try to get it from her. She is in a difficult situation with the man she loves, and I thought that she would use her secret weapon to keep him around. At the end of the story her best friend Sam has an accident and she uses it to save his life! I was totally not expecting that and I gasped! It was an amazing ending and I can't wait to find out what happens next. :)

    2. Bon jour Mrs. Engman, I have read a book with a surprising ending and it had to do with a French person in WWII. I thought the French guy would be captured but he was killed by his own men in his own army!! I forgot the tittle of the book.

      bye.

    3. That sounds like a real twist at the end! I love when I am reading and I am totally convinced that I know what is going to happen and then I am blown away by what really happens. That is good writing! :)

    4. Mr. Engman was wondering if the French man in your story during WWII was part of the Maquis? Did you know that the Maquis were responsible for rescuing thousands of allied airmen during the war? Mr. E. also said they were responsible for getting war changing intelligence to the allied forces. They were the unsung heroes of WWII!

    5. I don't know if he was part of the Maquis, but I think in the story he was the only actual French person there. I think the other people in the book were Nazis undercover, I'm not sure.

      Bye.

    1. Goober,
I also thought that story was really sad, and as you know I really had no idea of what had really happened until the end. Even though there was much sadness, I think that we can learn some valuable lessons about strength and how to deal with difficult situations. I love that story, but I think that I understand if you don't want to read it again.

    2. The Hunger Game series really kept me on the edge of my seat. The suspense was very intense and at times I was gritting my teeth! The writing was SO descriptive and I really felt as if I were there in the arena--which isn't necessarily a good feeling always!

    1. ChloCho,

The Seekers is a great series for kids. I always love when there is a sense of adventure. I can't believe Orcas attacked the animals! That is certainly unexpected!

    1. Tex,

Don't you love it when you get a book recommendation from a friend and then you can talk about it? I've never heard of this story. It must have been good if you read it in one night! When I went to San Francisco this summer I read an entire book on my flight from L.A. to Chicago. It really was like I was in my own world. :)

  6. when I read a book this summer it was really cool but the end was VERY weird at the end. I was like "what is this the wrong book." It was about a boy thats blind and he is a slave and he can pick locks like as if you are great at blinking your eye! He finds this box with three sets of eyes and there is agolden pair, green pair and I think a black pair. The gold pair transports himt o the place that the magic guy made them, the black pair turns him into whatever animal he last saw, and the green pair the first time he puts them in they were about to kill him but his friend,a talking cat thats a knight, knocks them out of him and they make it to their quest place and when he solves the problem it turns out he is the lost king of the kingdom and he has a siter!! I totally thought they were just going to be his new pair of eyes, but they weren't!! I loved this book. Hey Tex I can totally see you reading all night. Must have been a pretty good book!!

    3. Shay,

I've read "Walk Two Moons" about five times (or more!) times and it gets better each time. I think that the first time I read it I was reading so fast I missed a lot of details. Each time I think I understand the characters a little more. I feel like I know Gram and Gramps! I try to make connections between the characters and myself. I love Gram. She is so cute. :)
